A Story Untold is a compilation of nine written essays and one pictorial essay about the history of black men and women in Athens, Georgia. Each essay depicts either an individual contribution or the historical development of one of the major institutions within the Athens black community. The Author, Michael L. Thurmond, is a native of Athens. He received a B.A. degree in Philosophy and Religion from Paine College and a Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of South Carolina's School of law. In 1986 he became the first African American to be elected to the Georgia General Assembly from Athens/Clarke County since Reconstruction. Following his tenure in the legislature he was appointed Director of the Georgia Division of Family and Children's Services. He also served as superintendent of the 104,000 student DeKalb County School District, and at the time of this book's publication he was serving as C.E.O. of DeKalb County, Georgia.
